JST XHP-4 & JST Connector 6 Pin: A Procurement Admin’s Honest Buying Guide

If you’re about to order a JST XHP-4 or any “JST connector 6 pin” part, here’s the short version: the pin count is not the spec that matters. The series and pitch are. I learned that the expensive way—it cost about $2,800 in rework, freight, and one very tense phone call with a production manager. Check the series and pitch before you order, not after.

Why I’m the One Writing This

I’m not an engineer. I’m the purchasing and office administrator for a 130-person electronics assembly company. I manage component orders—roughly $140,000 a year across eight vendors—and I report to both operations and finance. The Mistake That Changed My Checklist

In 2023, an engineer asked me to order a JST XHP-4. I found a listing that called it a “JST 4-pin connector” and ordered 500 pieces from a broker. It was the right pin count. It was even white and roughly the same size. But it was the wrong series. The broker had sent a PH-series housing, not the XH-series housing the engineer needed.

When I compared the two side by side, I finally understood why the datasheets are so specific. They look nearly identical in a bin. On a board, they’re completely different: XH uses a 2.5mm pitch, PH uses 2.0mm. You can’t press one into the other without damaging the pins. The line stopped for an hour, we paid for overnight delivery of the correct parts, and we ate the cost of the wrong ones. Not ideal, but workable. The invoice math: $400 in returned freight, $230 in expedited shipping, and a day of a production supervisor’s time. That added up to about $2,800 when I included line downtime.

What “JST XHP-4” Actually Tells You

JST XHP-4 is a four-circuit housing in JST’s XH series. It is a 2.5mm pitch connector. The crimp contact is SXH-001T-P0.6, and the wire range is roughly AWG #28 to #22. According to JST’s product pages on jst-mfg.com, XH-series connectors are rated at 250V AC/DC and 3A. That’s useful, but the pitch is the part that will save you from my mistake.

The XHP-4 part number tells you the series—XH—and the circuit count: 4. It does not tell you that by itself if you don’t know the code. A PH-series 4-pin housing is PHR-4, not XHP-4. They are not interchangeable. If you see a listing that says “compatible with JST XHP-4,” ask for the datasheet. A compatible knock-off might work in a prototype; it’s not worth the risk on a production line.

What “JST Connector 6 Pin” Actually Means

Here’s the part that still confuses people: “JST connector 6 pin” is not one product. JST connector technologies cover PH, XH, VH, ZH, GH, and many other families. A six-pin PH housing is PHR-6. A six-pin XH housing is XHP-6. A six-pin VH housing is VHR-6. All are JST, all have six positions, and all use different pitch. PH is 2.0mm, XH is 2.5mm, VH is 3.96mm. That’s why you need the series before you can buy anything.

When someone asks me for a “JST connector 6 pin,” I ask two questions: what series, and what contacts? The housing and the crimp contacts are separate parts. For XH, the contact is SXH-001T-P0.6. For PH, it’s SPH-002T-P0.5. Ordering a housing without the right contact means you have a part that can’t be used.

The Buying Checklist I Actually Use

Here’s the checklist I use now, in order:

  1. Series and pitch. Is it XH, PH, VH, or something else? What is the center-to-center distance between pins?
  2. Contact part number. Housing and contacts are separate. Confirm the crimp terminal part number before ordering.
  3. Wire gauge and strip length. The same housing can work with different wire sizes, but the crimp spec and tooling change.
  4. Traceability. Can the supplier tell me the manufacturer, date code, and lot number? If not, that’s a red flag.
  5. Lead time and freight. The cheapest option isn’t cheap if the line is waiting.

That order is intentional. If the pitch is wrong, nothing else matters.

What I Stopped Doing

I used to approve quotes based on unit price. Not anymore. What I mean is that “cheap” isn’t just the line item cost—it’s the time spent checking the part, the cost of returning it, the risk of line downtime, and the possibility of a field failure eighteen months later. The lowest quote is rarely the lowest total cost.

The real game-changer in our process was not a connector at all. In our 2024 vendor consolidation project, I moved repeat component requests from email and phone to a digital BOM and quote workflow. That cut our ordering time from about two weeks to three days and eliminated the part-number typos that used to happen when someone scribbled a request on a sticky note. I’m not saying every old way is bad. For a custom quote or a true emergency, a phone call still wins. But for standard JST parts, a digital workflow is a no-brainer.

Did I go back and forth on that change? For a week. On paper, the old habit was easier. But the data was clear: fewer errors, faster turnaround, and less chasing. Switching to online ordering saved our accounting team something like six hours a month.

A Few Honest Boundaries

This advice is for buyers who need production quantities of JST XH, PH, VH, or similar series—not for someone designing a one-off prototype. If you only need two pieces for a bench test, buy from a local supplier and check the fit physically. And if you’re in the middle of a “jack gold rush”—a sudden scramble to find whatever connector is backordered—slow down. That’s exactly when mistakes happen.
