What Is JST? A Company Overview of the Name Behind XH, PH, and VH Connectors
Thursday, 4:47 p.m. The phone rings, and before I even say hello, I hear the sentence that starts most of my stressful weeks: “Please tell me you have these in stock.”
The caller ran a battery-pack assembly shop. They needed 30,000 two-pin connectors on a truck by Monday. They’d already quoted the job and booked the freight. Then they realized the part number on their worksheet was an XH-series connector. The PCB in front of them was laid out for PH.
The difference between XH and PH is 0.5 mm of pitch. Half a millimeter.
In my role coordinating rush orders for JST connectors, that half-millimeter has caused more emergencies than late suppliers, shipping damage, and customs delays combined. It isn’t bad luck. It’s a misunderstanding: people treat “JST” as if it were one product.
What “JST” Actually Is
JST is not a connector type. JST is a company: J.S.T. Mfg. Co., Ltd., a Japanese manufacturer founded in 1957 and headquartered in Osaka. The initials come from its original English name, Japan Solderless Terminal—which describes exactly how the company started.
JST began with solderless crimp terminals. Over the decades, it grew into wire-to-board and wire-to-wire connector systems, battery connectors, and application tooling. Its parts show up in appliances, automotive electronics, industrial controls, medical equipment, and consumer devices. In North America, the entity you usually deal with is JST Corporation; in other regions, the legal name may be a local subsidiary. Either way, the brand is shortened to “JST.”
Here’s the part that matters if you order parts for a living: JST’s own catalog, listed at jst-mfg.com as of January 2025, is organized into dozens of named series. XH, PH, SH, ZH, and VH are not decorative names. They are separate connector systems, designed for different jobs.
Why “A JST Connector” Is a Dangerous Phrase
All these families share a look. White plastic, crimped contacts, a locking tab. From arm’s length, a 2.0 mm PH housing and a 2.5 mm XH housing could pass for twins. On a production line, they are not even close.
You are most likely to run into these:
- SH — 1.0 mm pitch. Used where board space is extremely tight.
- PH — 2.0 mm pitch. A common small battery and PCB connector.
- ZH — 1.5 mm pitch. Frequently found in compact consumer and battery applications.
- XH — 2.5 mm pitch. Widely used in battery packs; in the RC and hobby world, it’s the familiar “JST-XH” balance connector.
- VH — 3.96 mm pitch. The bigger option, often on the power-input side of a board.
Why would one manufacturer make so many lookalikes? Because the tradeoffs are real. The pitch of a connector family reflects what it was built to do: how much current it carries, how much vibration it survives, how small the end product needs to be. The latch geometry, contact size, and housing keying are all tuned around those goals. They are not cosmetic differences.
That’s why each JST series uses its own housings, headers, and contacts designed as one system. A listing that just says “JST connector” is hiding all the information you actually need. And when users say, “I need a JST battery connector,” they often mean PH, while “I need a JST-XH” means XH. Both are JST. Neither can be ordered by the company name alone.
What an “Almost Right” Connector Costs
I keep one March 2024 case in mind whenever someone says, “It’s just a JST.” A customer called at 3:15 on a Wednesday. They needed 4,000 XH 4-position housings before Friday—about 40 hours away. Their usual factory resupply took two weeks. A lot they’d bought from a lower-cost online source looked fine in the bag, but ten assembled samples failed a simple pull test during incoming inspection.
We had the correct housings in regional stock and put them on air freight. The extra freight was about $780 on top of a $2,100 order. The delay they avoided would have triggered a $25,000 penalty clause. That story ended fine. Not all of them do.
Here’s the uncomfortable part: the connector itself costs pennies. The real cost is what happens downstream. A connector that looks right but isn’t right can create intermittent failures that take weeks to diagnose in the field—or heat problems that appear only under sustained current. By the time a product fails in the field, the “savings” from the cheap part have disappeared.
I have mixed feelings about parts sold as “JST-compatible.” Some customers run them for years trouble-free; others get burned on the first bad lot. The only reliable difference maker is testing—and testing under deadline pressure is how mistakes become expensive.
I’m not an electrical engineer, so I won’t pretend to hand you a current-derating table here. What I can tell you from years of procurement-side triage is this: before you lock in an alternate source or an unfamiliar series, compare its specs to something testable. Pitch, current rating, operating temperature, latch retention. If a supplier can’t produce those details, they are not a supplier; they’re a lottery ticket.
What About “JST XH Adapter” Searches?
A large share of “which JST” search traffic comes from the hobby and battery world. XH is the 2.5 mm pitch connector commonly used as a multi-cell LiPo balance connector. In that context, “JST-XH” is precise enough: it means the XH series, not PH or ZH.
If you are searching for a “JST XH adapter” to convert an XH plug to another connector shape, add the pin count and check the wire gauge on the adapter. A balance lead carries little current; a main power lead carries a lot more. Adapters solve connector shape, not electrical mismatch.
How to Order JST Connectors Without the Friday Phone Call
Here is the checklist I wish every new customer could see before quoting a rush job:
- Start from a part number, not a memory. A full JST order normally separates the housing, the contact, and the header. If you do not have the full part number, take it from the current BOM or the existing product.
- Identify the series before you call. Measure the pitch center-to-center: 1.0 mm suggests SH, 2.0 mm suggests PH, 2.5 mm suggests XH or EH, 3.96 mm suggests VH. Pitch alone is not a complete identification, but it eliminates most wrong guesses.
- Include the wire gauge. Contacts in each JST series are designed for specific wire ranges. If the specified wire is outside that range, the crimp may hold today and fail later.
- Ask the seller for the manufacturer part number and datasheet. A supplier who cannot tell you whether the part is XH or PH will not become more accurate after you pay.
- Test a small sample before a full production order. Thirty minutes of insertion and pull testing can reveal latch, retention, or fit issues that a photo on a listing page never will.
Bottom line: JST is an old, well-respected Japanese connector company. But there is no single “JST connector.” There is an XH, a PH, an SH, a ZH, a VH. Each series was engineered to solve a specific problem, and the difference can be half a millimeter.
Next time someone says they need “just a JST,” slow the conversation down long enough to ask which one. If you don’t know, measure the pitch first. It’s cheaper than any rush order I’ll ever quote you.
