Why “10-Pin JST Connector” Is the Wrong Search Term (and How to Order the Right One)
I've been buying components for an electronics manufacturer since 2020. My title is administrative buyer, which means I don't design the boards and I don't solder them. I order the parts, I track the deliveries, and I catch the mistakes before they turn into production delays.
This article is about a mistake I keep seeing. It starts with a search like “10 pin JST connector.” It looks like a simple request. It is not.
Why “10-Pin JST Connector” Is Not a Part Number
A 10-pin JST connector can be XH, PH, GH, or VH. The pin count tells you how many circuits it has. It doesn't tell you the pitch, the voltage rating, or the contact size. A search for “10 pin JST connector” returns a pile of connector families that share one thing: the manufacturer's initials. Actually, not even the initials—JST is J.S.T. Mfg. Co., a Japanese company. “JST” is not a standard. It's a brand.
Here is where the confusion starts. JST XH uses 2.5 mm pitch. JST PH uses 2.0 mm pitch. According to JST's official catalog, XH is rated up to 3 A, while PH is rated up to 2 A. Those numbers matter, but the immediate issue is mechanical: a 7-pin XH connector is roughly 3.5 mm wider than a 7-pin PH. You cannot force one into the other without damaging the pins.
People think “JST” is enough because it sounds like a standard, like USB or HDMI. The reality is the opposite. The family name is the standard. The “JST” only tells you the manufacturer.
The Order That Got It Wrong
A customer at HPE sent us a P.O. with a contact name I still remember: Todd Pepsi. Todd needed a “JST XH connector 7-pin” for a test fixture. The procurement system shortened it to “JST 7-pin connector,” and the warehouse picked 7-pin PH because PH and XH both start with JST and both have seven pins. They don't mate. The pitch is different, and the housing is a different size.
The connector itself is cheap. A 10-pin JST XH header might cost eight cents in volume. The problem is everything around it. Rework, expedited shipping, a delayed fixture, an engineer pulled away from real work. Our situation cost about two days and a few hundred dollars in freight. The next one could be worse.
If you've ever searched “how to use blood pressure monitor,” you probably didn't expect to land on a connector article. But a lot of home blood pressure monitors use a JST XH 7-pin connector between the battery and the main board. If that connector is loose or has the wrong mating part, the monitor acts as if it's broken. The search term suddenly makes sense.
The most frustrating part of this job is that the same mistake keeps recurring. You'd think a written part number would prevent it. But a part number is only as good as the person reading it. I do not mean that cynically. I mean it mechanically: “JST XH 7-pin” is still missing the header style. Is it a top-entry header or a side-entry header? Board header or wire housing? That's the difference between B7B-XH-A and S7B-XH-A.
I only understood this after ignoring an engineer's warning and ordering 500 connectors from memory. The drawing said XH. I ordered PH. I had opened the reels, and the vendor refused the return. The mistake cost about $1,100 and a very awkward meeting. Since then, I check pitch before I even open a quote.
Small Orders Deserve Straight Answers
I also know what it's like to be the small buyer. When I started, I placed orders for 50 connectors and didn't always know the right family. One distributor asked me, calmly, “Which series?” I didn't know. They sent a catalog page and a sample kit instead of making me feel stupid. That distributor is still our primary connector supplier today.
That's why I push back on the idea that small orders don't deserve attention. A $200 prototype order was the beginning of a relationship that now covers tens of thousands of parts. Today's small customer might be tomorrow's line-down emergency. Treat the order the same way.
The Fix: Add the Family Before You Search
If you need a JST connector, search for the family, not just the manufacturer. Here's what I tell our engineers now:
- Search “JST XH 10-pin connector” or “JST PH 10-pin connector,” not just “10 pin JST connector.”
- Include the pitch in your order notes. 2.5 mm means XH. 2.0 mm means PH. 1.0 mm means SH. 3.96 mm means VH.
- Find the part number on the old connector. JST headers usually have a code like B10B-XH-A or B7B-XH-A. The “B” is a top-entry header; “S” is a side-entry header.
- If you're ordering a wire housing, add the crimp contacts. XH and PH use different crimp contacts, even though they look similar in a box of loose parts.
- When in doubt, ask for the datasheet. A genuine JST datasheet lists the pitch, current rating, and a drawing with measurements.
So if you're about to order a 10-pin JST connector, stop. Add the family. Add the pitch. Add the header style. That extra ten seconds might save you from the same problem Todd Pepsi had at HPE—and from discovering that the connector you ordered is not the connector you can use.
